A Fresh Start in Knaresborough: Rear Extension Underway at Princess Grove
At Grace and Morris Architects, we are pleased to share that construction is progressing well on our latest residential project in Knaresborough. As Harrogate residential architects with a reputation for crafting thoughtful and enduring domestic spaces, we are delighted to be working closely with the client to reimagine their home for contemporary family living.
Located on Princess Grove, the existing property is undergoing a carefully considered rear extension to create an open plan kitchen, dining and living space. This transformation responds directly to the client’s need for a more sociable and fluid environment that complements their day-to-day life. The new space will open out onto a generous patio area via two sets of full-height glazed French doors, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor connection and maximising natural light and aspect.
A large double rooflight has been sensitively positioned above the new space, designed to pull light deep into the centre of the home. This central intervention will create a bright and uplifting atmosphere throughout the day, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and enhancing the sense of openness.
In tandem with the rear extension, the kitchen is being reconfigured to suit the new layout and orientation. A side door entrance has also been introduced to form a functional boot room area, ensuring the practicalities of family life are elegantly accommodated. This space will serve as a transitional threshold between the outdoors and the main living areas, improving organisation and day-to-day usability.
The architectural language of the extension reflects the existing property with carefully matched brickwork and proportions, ensuring a respectful and coherent addition. Internally, the layout balances openness with intimacy, offering zones for dining, cooking and relaxing, while maintaining visual and physical connectivity.
Work on site began last month and is progressing on programme. We are currently coordinating closely with the contractor and structural engineer to ensure the build remains efficient and well-detailed throughout. The structural openings have been formed, and installation of the new doors and rooflight is imminent.
