Embracing Broken-Plan Living: A Contemporary Approach by Grace & Morris Architects

At Grace & Morris Architects, we have observed a significant shift in residential design preferences. Homeowners are increasingly moving away from traditional open-plan layouts in favour of 'broken-plan' living. This approach maintains the openness of space while introducing subtle separations to create distinct, functional zones.

Understanding Broken-Plan Living

Broken-plan living retains the spaciousness of open-plan designs but introduces elements such as partial walls, glazed partitions, and bespoke joinery to delineate areas without completely enclosing them. This method addresses the need for privacy and functionality, especially in homes where multiple activities occur simultaneously.

For instance, incorporating a half-height wall or a strategically placed bookshelf can separate a dining area from a lounge, allowing for concurrent activities without interference. This design strategy enhances the usability of spaces, catering to the evolving needs of modern families.

Implementing Broken-Plan Concepts in Our Projects

Our commitment to innovative design is evident in several of our projects where broken-plan living has been effectively employed.

Project No.2 – Roundhay Conservation Area, North Leeds

In this two-storey conversion, we transformed a detached home by adding a rear extension and loft conversion. The design introduced a broken-plan layout that seamlessly connects the kitchen, dining, and living areas while providing distinct zones for each function. The use of varied floor levels and tailored joinery elements created a harmonious flow, enhancing both aesthetics and practicality.

Project No.284 – Family Home on the Edge of Greenbelt Land

This substantial two-storey extension and internal renovation focused on redefining the ground floor into a cohesive yet segmented space. We introduced a light-filled kitchen and dining area, complemented by a dedicated living space separated by a custom-built bookshelf. Additional features included a pantry, utility room, boot room with dog shower, WC, and an office with a dedicated art space for children. The repositioning of the staircase further enhanced the spatial dynamics, exemplifying the broken-plan concept.

Advantages of Broken-Plan Living

The adoption of broken-plan layouts offers several benefits:

  • Enhanced Functionality: Distinct zones allow for simultaneous activities without disruption.

  • Improved Acoustics: Partial separations help in managing noise levels across different areas.

  • Aesthetic Appeal: The interplay of open and segmented spaces adds visual interest and depth.

  • Flexibility: Spaces can be adapted or reconfigured to meet changing needs over time.
